Motor Oil Matters (MOM) is the American Petroleum Institute’s (API) program for licensing motor oil distributors and oil change locations.
MOM has one main goal: To make sure that consumers receive high-quality gasoline and diesel oils. This is accomplished by maintaining
a secure chain-of-custody for motor oil from the marketer all the way to the vehicle. The MOM mark helps identify distributors and oil change locations committed to providing motor oil meeting the performance standards recommended by most vehicle and engine manufacturers.
o Is it the right viscosity? Use the viscosity recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
o Is it API-licensed?
Know the performance level recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Oils certified as meeting API standards are easy to spot – just look for the API Starburst or API Donut.
o Do you know what you’re getting?
Confirm the brand, viscosity, and performance level of the oil before it’s poured in your car or truck.
o Getting a full change? Make sure the oil change includes a fresh filter.
o Did you get a receipt? Double-check the receipt to confirm that the service provider poured the motor oil you asked for and that it meets your manufacturer’s recommendation.
o When’s your next change? Write down the mileage and date you had your oil changed. Check your owner’s manual for recommended change intervals.
